Portland Quarry

The Living Land Archive

A life's work by artist Hannah Sofaer MA (RCA), Drill Hall Gallery, Portland, Dorset September 2021

The exhibition bought climate change into perspective by clearly demonstrating to the visitors the powerful impact we have had on our planet.

Challenge

Light Art Creatives were invited to collaborate with the artist Hannah Sofaer to culminate of decades of hard work into an exhibit by using the medium of light to highlight, complement and visualise the story of Portland's changing environment. Rich in culture, heritage and importantly geology, Hannah was able to tell the story of climate change in an emotive and personal way, enabling the visitors to feel more connected to the land on which they live and to find a meaning to how our 'footprint' is effecting the earth itself.

Value

Portland Sculpture & Quarry Trusts Living Land Archive, animated through artists collaborative projects and community presentations, brought the macro and micro detail of Portland’s unique landscape into focus; addressing issues of climate change within a new model for re-generation that shared knowledge and skills across disciplines.

The forward-looking partnership both supported and created new structures for the future sustainability of our landscape and environment, with presentations that related to the interpretation and regeneration of 11 contrasting quarries within a half-mile radius of the Drill Hall.
